Scouts Registration 2016-17
We’re back after the Summer break and ready for another year of Scouting. To get the year started, we will be having our registration evening next Monday. Details are:
Date: Mon Sep 12
Place: Scout Den upstairs at Claregalway Community Centre.
Please complete the Registration Form and Activities Consent Forms and bring these with you on the night.
Registration costs for this year are €90 for a single member, €160 for 2 family members or €240 for 3 family members
All existing members form last year that wish to continue need to be registered again for this year.
As there is a waiting list for most sections, you need to have previously submitted a waiting list form to be included on the list. At this time of year, we review the list and invite new members to register. You will be contacted by the relevant Section leader or the overall Group Leader if a place has become available.
For those considering joining (or adding a name to the list), it is important to understand that Scouting aims to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development with a strong focus on the outdoors. This means that all sections will have many outdoor activities during the year such as hikes, water activities, backwoods, camping and more. As we live in Ireland, we do these in all kinds of weather conditions!
Beavers had a great weekend at the annual County Camp event for Beaver & Cub groups from around Galway.
Here are some photos from the weekend.
This was the last Beaver event of the year so enjoy the Summer and we hope to see everyone again in September!
It’s almost time for our annual camp. In addition to the packing checklist below, here are some further updates. Please read and get in touch (text to 086 054 5329) if you have any questions.
We will depart at 4.30pm sharp on Friday from the Community Centre. We are driving individually (to keep costs down) & there will be quite a bit of packing of rucksacks etc into cars so please try to arrive around 4.
We expect to be back at the Community Centre at 1pm on Sunday. If it is going to be later we will send out a text that morning.
Packing & Weather
Here is the checklist again of items that Beavers will need. Please note that clothing items on the list below include those that the Beaver will wear when leaving for camp (uniform, tracksuit & footwear).
At our bag check on Tue evening, there were quite a few Beavers without rain gear. It’s really important that all Beavers have rainproof jacket, trousers and footwear – especially given the forecast for this weekend.
It’s also important that the contents of the rucksack are kept inside a plastic bag to avoid getting wet. You may decide to use multiple bags to separately pack night gear for example.
Sleeping bag and mat are often strapped onto the outside of the rucksack so please ensure that these are separately covered with a plastic bag each to keep them dry.
All food for Sat & Sun is included in the price. We’re asking that Beavers bring a packed lunch/evening tea for Fri when we arrive at camp.
The balance of the camp costs (€20 for those that paid the €15 deposit) is due on Friday. We have to pay for everyone when we arrive at camp (as well as buying food etc in advance) so please do make sure to bring any balance due with you on Friday.
YiS, Beaver Scouters
An Activity Consent form must be completed for each Beaver going on camp. We will be asking parents to complete these for tomorrow (Tue) evening’s Beaver meeting in Knockdoemore.
The form can be printed out and completed in advance if that is more convenient. Alternatively, we will have forms available for completion with us on Tuesday evening.
The form required is available here.
Claregalway Beaver Scouts will be going on camp this June with Beaver groups from all over county Galway at the County Camp 2016.
The camp will take place in Portlick Scout Campsite near Athlone on the weekend of June 10-12.
This promises to be a great weekend with activities such as kayaking, archery, obstacle courses and more planned.
We will provide full details soon but for now we need to get numbers of Beavers that plan to go. The camp will be from Friday evening until Sunday morning.
The cost of the weekend will be approx €35 per Beaver which includes a subsidy from the group so it is great value. This includes camp, food for Sat & Sun morning (packed lunch for Fri) and all activities. We hope to not require a bus and to transport everyone and everything by car.
In order to reserve a place, we need to collect a deposit of €15 per Beaver by Tue May 3. Please text back to 086 0545329 with Beaver name and yes/no for camp.
Beavers and Cubs are going to Atlantic AirVenture on Sunday Apr 24.
Atlantic AirVenture is an exciting and interactive Aviation Museum, Aviation Education Centre and Flight Simulation Centre located in Shannon, Co. Clare. They have a special program for Scouts based around the “Air Activities” badges.
We will travel to Shannon by bus from the Community Centre in Clareagalway.
Date: Apr 24
Cost: €25 per Beaver/Cub (inc bus)
Beavers and Cubs should wear their scouts uniform and bring a packed lunch and drink with them.
We have a visit to Lisheenkyle Woods planned for tomorrow evening (Tue Apr 5) for Beavers.
We’ll have a nature walk through the woods and we also plan to have a short Investiture ceremony.
The Investiture is a special ceremony where Beavers who joined this year formally make their Beaver Scout Promise and become a member of the Beaver Colony.
Dropoff/pickup will be at Lisheenkyle national school at 6.30/7.30pm.
The Beaver skills & games county event is coming up this Sunday, April 3. Please note that there is an earlier start time now of 12.30pm in Esker.

Parents to Assist
As we are involved in several activities on the day as well as escorting our own Beavers around, all of the Beaver Scouters available will be there. In addition, if any parents are available to attend the event and assist, we would really appreciate it. Please text 086 0545329 to let us know if you can help.
We will have a lunch base on the day where Beavers will receive breaded chicken strips, with cheese or salad in a wrap, a small bottle of water and a piece of fruit. However, it’s a long day so we advise Beavers to bring a packed lunch and drink also.
